The costs of a hair pulling disorder

hair pulling disorder

A hair pulling disorder, also known as trichotillomania, is more than just a habit. It’s a powerful urge that can take over your life, making you feel frustrated, embarrassed, and helpless. If you or someone you know struggles with this, there’s a way to get help—hypnosis can make a real difference.

Approximately one out of 50 people may have this behaviour. However, many people don’t come forward because of embarassement, so it’s hard to say exactly how much of the population does it.

Scarves and hats are one way people hide how their hair looks. Others are careful not to concentrate their pulling in on area to avoid bald patches.

A hair pulling disorder has costs, both emotionally and financially.

Emotional Costs of a Hair Pulling Disorder

People with this coping habit may feel all or some of the following:

  • Embarrassed
  • Frustrated
  • Helpless
  • Guilty
  • Low self-esteem
  • Isolated
  • Fear of being judged

Financial Costs of a Hair Pulling Disorder

“Seen” Costs

People with a hair pulling disorder spend money on:

  • wigs
  • toupee
  • hats
  • scarves
  • make-up

to cover up the effects of the habit – and they can add up.

“Unseen” Costs

Because of the feelings of low confidence or self-esteem, people with a hair pulling disorder miss opportunities in life. For  example, a lack of self-esteem or confidence can cause them to:

  • Not asking someone out which means they may potentially miss out on finding the perfect life partner.
  • Feel too embarrassed to accept a date because they don’t want to have to explain bald patches or why they always wear hats – those can be passed off as a fashion statement for only so long
  • Missing out on great jobs or promotions because employers or senior managers pick up on nonverbal cues and may pass over someone perfect for a position because of the image they project.

Hypnosis Can Help

Do you have a hair pulling disorder and feel discouraged? Hypnosis can help.

Here’s the thing, you were not born with this habit which means that somewhere along the way, you discovered it to cope with stress or other events in life. Even though this behaviour may have served you well in the past, as an adult, the reasons that caused you to start pulling your hair out don’t affect you, but your inner mind doesn’t know that. It still thinks you need to pull your hair to cope with any stress or setbacks you encounter. However, that need to pull has been programmed into your inner mind.

Hypnosis is a fantastic way to change that programming so that you can stop pulling your hair out and allow it to grow and fill back in.

Are you curious? Then, why not book a free 20-minute chat and find out if hypnosis is right for you and if we feel like a good match to work together? After all, it could be the conversation that changes your life – like it did for the client who wrote this testimonial who stopped her hair pulling habit as a result of hypnosis.
