Don’t dull your shine!

sparkly hair band

A cleaning lady picked up my sparkly hairband and casually asked if it belonged to my granddaughter or daughter.

I couldn’t help but laugh and say, “No, it’s mine!” I bought it at a store meant for adults, fully embracing the idea that being grown up doesn’t mean you have to dull your sparkle.

Somewhere along the way, many of us picked up the idea that adulthood means toning down our choices.

We start to believe that bright colors, bold patterns, or anything that feels playful are no longer “appropriate.”

But who made these rules? Maybe it was the adults in our lives when we were children who instilled that belief.

They modeled a world where growing up seemed to mean letting go of the things that brought joy in favour of the “serious” and “sensible.”

But here’s the thing: 60 in 2024 is not the same as 60 was in 1984. Life has changed. We’ve evolved, and with that comes the freedom to express ourselves in ways that make us feel alive. Just because we’re older doesn’t mean we have to settle for boring, plain, and dull.

Wearing a sparkly hairband doesn’t make me less of an adult. It’s a reminder that I still get to choose fun, whimsy, and whatever makes me feel good.

So let’s challenge the notion that being an adult means fading into the background. Whether it’s a bright hairband, funky shoes, or anything else that speaks to you, don’t be afraid to stand out.

Life’s too short to live by outdated ideas of what adulthood “should” look like. Embrace your sparkle, and let the world see that growing up doesn’t mean growing dull!
